Material Culture in the Early Modern World

Tailor's workshop

TERM CARD | EASTER TERM: Cultures and Practices of Knowledge

*Forthcoming*

WORKSHOP INFORMATION:

FORMAT

The Material Culture in the Early Modern World (MCEMW) workshop is an interdisciplinary forum run by postgraduate students. Whilst based in the History faculty, the convenors warmly invite those from a broad range of disciplines and across all geographies to attend and present, especially ECRs and Postgraduate students. The workshop provides a productive and open forum for the discussion of both new or work-in-progress papers, and we welcome those at any stage in their academic career to submit an abstract.

The workshop will take place on Tuesdays at 5-7pm, and will operate in a hybrid format. For those meeting in person, discussion will continue afterwards at the Eagle. Papers are typically 20 minutes, followed by time for discussion and questions, but both format and length are flexible.

For the Zoom link, please subscribe to our mailing list: https://lists.cam.ac.uk/sympa/info/soc-materialcultureworkshop or email the convenors.

THEMES

The workshop is interested in papers spanning broad themes, related to objects in the early modern world, the meanings they held, and the way in which people and objects interacted. This includes multi sensorial approaches, incorporating visual, haptic, olfactory, aural and gustatory experiences. For Easter Term 2024, we invite papers relating to the theme(s): ‘Cultures and Practices of Knowledge’.
