Historical Thinking III
The Historical Thinking paper provides a culmination to the reflection on the practice of history explored earlier in the degree by Introduction to Historical Thinking 1A and Introduction to Historical Thinking 1B. The Faculty provides a sequence of weekly thematic lectures which start in week 5 of Michaelmas Term and continue through Lent Term. Colleges will normally supply between four to six hours of teaching across the year, mostly in the form of discussion seminars in college, plus an individual supervision early in Easter Term on a practice essay answer.
The Faculty also proffers some discussion seminars led by postgraduate students, in Lent Term. The Faculty endeavours to provide one for each thematic topic, but this necessarily depends upon postgraduate availability.
It is important to note that the paper aims to encourage reflection and analysis that draws upon the student's experience across the whole of their degree. Thus the lectures/seminars specific to the paper are only a starting point and prompt: students will also want to reflect upon their past papers and on their current Part II papers, to consider how an element of 'historical thinking' might be explored thematically, methodologically and analytically across a swathe of historical settings
This material is intended for current students but will be interesting to prospective students. It is indicative only.
