The Vice Chancellor's Advisory Group on the Legacies of Enslavement: Two Research Fellowships
The Advisory Group was created in early 2019 at the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope, in light of the growing public interest in the issue of British universities' historical links to the slave trade. It has been asked to advise him on the University of Cambridge's historical links with the Slave Trade and to propose future action in the light of this. To assist in this work it will appoint two post-doctoral Research Fellows.
Post-doctoral Research Fellowship Post 1 This RF will have expertise in archival research and will be expected to undertake historical/archival research into the ways in which the University may have gained financially and otherwise from the slave trade or other historical forms of coerced labour connected to colonialism. This may extend to the acquisition of artefacts and collections currently in University's libraries, museums and other collections.
Post-doctoral Research Fellowship Post 2 This RF will have expertise in the history of the idea of race (including one or more of: intellectual history, institutional history, the history of knowledge and social and cultural history). They will be expected to undertake research into how the University's scholarship and scholars based at the University may have supported the validation and dissemination of racialized knowledge and discrimination. The commissioned research may address the abolitionist movement in that context as also the history of scholarship which was pro-slavery. The research may consider any and all disciplines practiced at the University.
A PhD is required in a relevant discipline.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
