Professor David Abulafia honoured in the King’s Birthday List 2023

The History Faculty welcomes the news that Professor David Abulafia, historian of the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the King’s Birthday Honours 2023 for services to scholarship. This honour joins the many other achievements of Prof Abulafia, including a British Academy medal in 2013 for The Great Sea: A Human History of the Mediterranean, the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity, the Mountbatten Literary Award, and the Wolfson History Prize in 2020 for his book, The Boundless Sea: A Human History of the Oceans. Prof Abulafia lectured at the Faculty for many decades, and is a former Chair of the Faculty. An alumnus of King’s College Cambridge, he has spent much of his professional life as a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, which he joined in 1974 and where he holds a Life Fellowship. He is Professor Emeritus in Mediterranean History and continues to play an active part in the intellectual life of the Faculty and the historical community.
