Edmund Burke remarked that society is 'a contract between the dead, the living and those yet to be born’. My lectures consider the ways different societies at different periods negotiate the contract - whether it be the way that wealth is passed between generations that can reinforce or mitigate social inequality, or the actions of current generations on climate change that will affect the life of generations not yet born.
