Dr Michael Joseph receives French History Article Prize

News

Congratulations to Michael Joseph, who won the 2022 French History Article Prize for ‘Black women, separation allowances and citizenship in the French Caribbean during the First World War’ (December 2021).

‘I'm very grateful to have won the French History Article Prize for 2021,’ Dr Joseph said. ‘The article finds the First World War in unfamiliar places - Martinique and Guadeloupe - and traces how the families of those conscripted into the French army navigated the system of allowances for soldiers' dependants. In so doing, it tries to bring established arguments about the wartime evolution of French welfarism into conversation with longer histories of race, labour, and politics in the Caribbean. I hope people will enjoy reading it!’

The article is open access and free to read online.
