Dr Helen Pfeifer wins 2024 Pilkington Prize
Helen Pfeifer, Associate Professor in Early Ottoman History, has won the 2024 Pilkington Prize, which is awarded annually to members of staff in recognition of their contributions to teaching excellence.
Dr Pfeifer is an outstanding teacher of History, whose courses are always oversubscribed. She made a key contribution to the reform of Part I of the Historical Tripos, particularly in co-designing a new methodological component, Historical Thinking. Her determination to further the provision of Turkish language teaching has proved transformative for postgraduate researchers engaging with the Middle East.
The Pilkington Prize was initiated by Sir Alastair Pilkington (1920 – 1995), who believed that the quality of teaching was crucial to the University's success. The first prizes were awarded in 1994. The Faculty’s Nicholas Guyatt, Professor of North American History, was among the 2023 Pilkington Prize winners.
