George Palmer
PhD Candidate in Modern British History
I am a PhD candidate at Emmanuel College with a particular interest in the relationship between religion and politics in modern Britain. My thesis is entitled 'Anglican Culture and English Public Life, 1870-1914' and examines the role the Church of England played in shaping key political issues such as education, temperance, and the future of the establishment. It surveys the Church's political culture at parocial and diocesan levels and the way in which these levels intersected with national organisations. My work is supervised by Gareth Atkins.
Before this, I studied for an MPhil in Modern British History at Cambridge in 2021-22 and prior to that for a BA in History at Hertford College Oxford from 2018-21. I am also a co-convener of the Modern British History Workshop for the academic year 2023-24.
