Fearghal Grace

Congratulations to Fearghal Grace who has won the first award of the Robert Silver Prize, established to encourage young historians in their studies or research, and to promote research on the impact of British Jewry on twentieth century Britain.

Fearghal's winning essay was 'Jewish ex-Servicemen and the 1935 Visit of the British Legion to Nazi Germany'. An edited version of the essay will be published in Jewish Chronicle.

In the minds of Jewish veterans, the British Legion's trip to Germany reinforced a perception of that organisation that it could not put up a sufficient fight to anti-Semitism. The events of that Summer therefore exposed ethnic divisions in interwar associational life which have only begun to be explored.
