Internal Research Funding

Arts and Humanities Impact Fund

Deadline: 5pm on 22 November 2019.

The Arts & Humanities Impact Fund provides flexible funding to support and enhance the impact of Arts and Humanities research.

There are funds of up to £40,000 available for this call and we expect to fund between 5 and 8 projects. The typical level of award will therefore be in the region of £5,000 to £10,000. The award will cover 100% of directly incurred costs but will not cover indirect costs. It does not attract ICC.

Projects must be completed within 9 months of the award of the grant for that project. Bids for testing experimental or innovative approaches are welcome.

Cambridge Humanities Research Grants (CHRG)

Deadline: now closed. Next round Michaelmas 2019.

The Cambridge Humanities Research Grants Scheme enables researchers to conduct small-scale research activities, of the highest quality, that leads to bids for larger-scale funding, and/or to generate publications, and/or to contribute materially in other ways towards the research objectives of their home institution.

Project support is between £1,000-£20,000 lasting usually up to 10 months (with most research expected to take place in the Easter and Long vacations).

Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH) Early Career Fellowship

Deadline: next round opens Michaelmas 2019.

The Early Career Fellowship scheme at CRASSH, jointly funded by the Isaac Newton Trust and the Schools of Arts & Humanities and Humanities & Social Sciences, allows Cambridge University Teaching Officers and College Teaching Officers to apply for an additional term of research leave in order to develop a new research project.

The value of the award is set at a flat rate of £2,000 per fellow per term (if Easter Term leave is requested, the sum is reduced to £1,000).

ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA)

Deadline: current round is closed.

The ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) aims to enhance the exploitation of the outputs of social science research in the University whether or not funded by the ESRC.

Projects ranging in value from £10,000 to £20,000 will be supported. Projects should be completed within 12 months of the award of the grant, though most projects are shorter. Bids for testing experimental or innovative approaches are welcome.

Global Challenges Research Fund

Deadline: Now closed.

As part of the 2015 spending review, the UK government has provided £1.5 billion of Official development Assistance for research – the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The current financial allocation will run until 2020/21 and is gradually rolled out with particular increase from 2017/18. First substantial funding calls are already released now with substantial opportunities for researchers in the arts, humanities and social sciences (AHSS) and more becoming available with relatively short deadlines from AHRC and ESRC.

Returning Carers Scheme

Deadline: next round TBA.

The Returning Carers Scheme managed by Human Resources offers funds to assist returning carers in building up their research profiles and other academic activity after a period away from work.

Requests for funds should not normally exceed £10,000 in total, based on direct costs (although exceptional cases for support up to £20,000 may be considered). The cost of consumables should not exceed £3,000 and should receive detailed justification in an applicant’s proposal.

University Diversity Fund

Deadline: currently closed.

The University Diversity Fund allocates grants of up to £1500 to initiatives addressing inequalities and embedding diversity and inclusion at the University.
