Language Training

Language Training

The University’s Language Centre supports the teaching and learning of languages throughout the University. It does so flexibly in accordance with the needs of its users; it uses IT to underpin its operations and its activities are informed by relevant research in second language acquisition and educational technology.

Many of our students choose to study a language during their time at the University, and for some of the MPhils it is a compulsory element.

Academic Development and Training for International Students (ADTIS)

The Language Centre ADTIS programme provides a range of courses and support programmes in English. These programmes are designed and focused on helping students to improve both their English language and their academic skills during their time at Cambridge.

How to Enrol

Students will be able to enrol directly with the Language Centre. Courses will be advertised from the middle of September and places are limited so it's important to book as soon as possible if students wish to take the courses, particularly for Academic Reading courses which are generally oversubscribed. If you need any advice on this please e-mail us.

Detailed description of all courses (all languages and levels) offered can be found online at http://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/lc/culp/culp-general-courses.html

Available classes (including all timeslots for Michaelmas/Lent courses) and booking information can be found online at http://www.training.cam.ac.uk/lc/theme/CULP

Funding for Language Training

Where language training is a compulsory element of an MPhil Programme, this cost will be covered by the Faculty.

Students are also encouraged to approach their College, who may have funding available for such training.

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences PhD students only can apply for a bursary to cover the costs a CULP course or attendance at other fee charging courses offered within the University or externally. Students can apply twice a year:

Cycle 1: Michaelmas Term 2017 (closed 2 October 2017).

Cycle 2: Lent Term 2018 (opens 5 February. Deadline: 9am 5th March 2018).

Further information, and a link to the application form can be found on the Language Centre’s website: http://www.langcen.cam.ac.uk/lc/graduates/funding-opportunities.html
