Malika Zehni

PhD Candidate

I completed my undergraduate degree in History of Art and Archaeology at SOAS, University of London and my MPhil in World History at Cambridge. Before starting my postgraduate degree, I worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I am currently a PhD candidate at Gonville and Caius College funded by the Cambridge International Trust.

My PhD project explores questions of documentary control and mobility in Russian Central Asia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I am broadly interested in the history of transnational mobility, identification technologies and spatialisation. In line with this, I examine the role of papers of identification, quarantine certificates and asylum petitions. In addition to this, I am interested in spatial and urban history, and museum studies and material history.
