Dr Edward Anderson

Edward Anderson is the Smuts Research Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the Centre of South Asian Studies, and a Postdoctoral Affiliate of Trinity College. He completed his PhD at the Faculty of History, University of Cambridge, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. He also has an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies from Cambridge, an MA in Political Science from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and a BA(Hons) in Politics and Philosophy from the University of Leeds. 

Indian politics and contemporary history; world history; nationalism; religion; migration; diaspora; multiculturalism; transnational networks; digital democracy; social media; long-distance nationalism; political activism.

Dr Anderson has supervised extensively for research theses for the Historical Tripos, and the MPhils in Modern South Asian Studies and World History. Topics on which he has supervised MPhil and undergraduate dissertations include: Postcolonial Indian history, Migration, Hindutva, Hinduism, South Asian diasporas, Neo-liberalism, Multiculturalism, Muslim communities, digital politics, and online activism.

Dr Anderson teaches modern South Asian history and politics, and the history and politics of migration, at the History Faculty and POLIS. He has supervised and lectured on Paper 23, Paper 28, HAP, the MPhil in World History, and the MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies. He convenes MPhil options on 'Social movements, dissent, and belonging in colonial and postcolonial South Asia' (with Dr Leigh Denault), and 'Mobility, circulation and diaspora: migration, society, politics in Modern South Asia' (with Professor Joya Chatterji and Dr David Washbrook).
