Biography:

Previous Positions: 1989–2001 University Lecturer in Ancient History in the University of Oxford and Fellow and Tutor at Corpus Christi College Oxford (titular Professor of Ancient History from July 1996; British Academy Research Reader, October 1999– September 2001)
1986–9 Fixed-term tutorial fellow in Ancient History, Magdalen College Oxford
1982–6 Junior Research Fellow, King's College, Cambridge

Ancient and Medieval History:

Research Interests

I work on the Greek History (political, social, economic, cultural) and Greek Archaeology (field archaeology and art history) between 1000 B.C. and 200 B.C. Much of my work concerns the use of material evidence to answer historical questions.

Research Supervision

I have supervised some successful 17 Ph.D students on a wide range of topics in Greek history, archaeology and art history, and regularly supervise 2–4 MPhil students each year on similar topics.

Teaching

My undergraduate lecturing and supervising covers Greek history Classical archaeology and Roman history.

Other Professional Activities

I am currently Chairman of the Council of University Classical Departments and Chairman of Sub-panel 31 (Classics) in REF 2014. I was President of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies 2002–6.

I am an editor of the following book series: Cambridge Classical Studies, Oxford University Press's Classical Society and Culture, and LACTORs.

I sit on the editorial boards of Journal of Hellenic Studies, American Journal of Archaeology, Past and Present, Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology.
