Mimi Michael Howard

I completed my B.A. in History at Reed College in Portland, OR. In 2016, I came to Cambridge to take the MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History, and began my PhD in History the following year.

Research Interests

My PhD focuses on a set of German philosophers writing after 1945 who called upon early Christianity in recasting the remit of political theory. Beyond tracing the 'topos' of Urchristentum in post-war thought, and evaluating its persistence within contemporary political discourse, my research considers how and why universalizing political languages articulate through context-dependent images and ideas of place. I am, in broader scope, interested in how genealogical practices regulate a notion of shared tradition, and uphold ideas about who falls within or beyond that tradition's pale.

Special Interests: modern European intellectual history, critical theory, continental philosophy, history of political thought, religion.
