Biography:

Kuan-jen Chen (陳冠任) was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He was educated at National Chengchi University (國立政治大學) and received his BA in 2008. Thereafter, he studied international history at the Graduate Institute of History of the same university and worked with Prof. Chi-hua, Tang (唐啟華). Chen focused his research on postwar Sino-Japanese relations and Cold War history. His graduate studies were funded by the Prof. Feng-teh Liao Scholarship (廖風德先生學術研究培育獎) and the Prof. Han-yu Chang Scholarship(張漢裕教授獎學金). His research was also supported by the Interchange Association, Japan (財团法人交流協會) in 2011.

In 2011, he obtained his MA from National Chengchi University. His thesis was titled "The Historical Development of the Fishery Right of the Republic of China, 1912-1982" (《中華民國漁權發展的歷史考察(1912-1982)》). Afterwards, he was deployed as a corporal at the Military Police at Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology to fulfill his compulsory military service between 2011 and 2012. Thereafter, he taught history and civics in junior high schools in 2013.

His first academic book "Inception, Progress and Breakthrough: the History of the Fishery Right of the Republic of China, 1912-1982"  (《萌動、遞嬗與突破:中華民國漁權發展史(1912-1982)》) was published in 2013. 

In 2014, he began to pursue his PhD at the Faculty of History, Cambridge University working with Professor Andrew Preston. Chen’s research is primarily concerned with the New Order on the Sea during the Cold War era. The tentative title of his PhD dissertation is ‘US Maritime Policy in Cold War East Asia, 1945-1979.’ His research is financially supported by the Japan Foundation, Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, Cambridge University, and European Research Council.  

He reads Chinese, English, Français and Japanese.
