My research examines interactions between governments and international banking and trading corporations during the early years of the European expansion into Asia and the Americas (fifteenth to sixteenth centuries). I investigate how these companies offered loans, supplies of luxury items and exotica, and financial and administrative skills and networks in return for tax exemptions and other privileges.
