Charlotte Johann

PhD candidate

Before starting my PhD I took a degree in political science from the Freie Universität Berlin and subsequently read for the MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History at Cambridge.

Research Interests

My PhD research is situated at the intersection of German political history, the history of political thought and legal history. My dissertation investigates the politics of jurisprudence in the early nineteenth-century, and specifically Friedrich Carl von Savigny and the German Historical School of Law. It explores through the lense of legal debates the ways in which ideas and politics interacted with one another in German-speaking Europe between the French Revolution and 1848. Other interests include the history of historiography and the history of nationalism broadly conceived.
