The Unmaking of the English Working Class: Selfhood, Possessions, and Politics, c.1930-1983

Jon Lawrence, Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship 2013-15

This project uses the surviving manuscript sources from a dozen social surveys conducted between the 1930s and the mid-2000s to interrogate contemporary languages of social understanding, and how these have changed over time.

The project is also interested in the relationship between these vernacular languages of the social and how formal party politics conceptualised social life and social change in the same places at the same time.

Alongside the study of social-science field-notes, there is therefore a parallel study of both local and national political propaganda circulating in each of the localities before and during the original community study.
