Violent Culture/Cultural Violence

One day conference to be held at Murray Edwards College on 9th June 2012

The Violence and Conflict Graduate workshop was established to bring together military historians with those looking at the social, cultural and political histories of violence.

The conveners are this year holding this one day conference with the aim of exploring one specific—cultural—dimension within the broad theme of violence and conflict and to attract a broader audience and variety of speakers than possible at the termly sessions.
The conference will be structured around the following three broad categories:
  • The use of violence beyond state-centred approaches
  • The cultural impact of violence
  • The memorialisation and commemoration of violence.

In bringing together graduate researchers from different research institutes and disciplines, the conference will create an ideal forum for an innovative discussion on violent culture and cultural violence.

A provisional programme, subject to change, can be found here. Abstracts are accessible here.
