MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History

MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History

This nine-month course aims to offer you training in, and increase your understanding of, the central themes of political thought and intellectual history. It is seen as a bridging course between undergraduate and doctoral study, which you can use not just for single-track preparation for the PhD, but also for more general learning and for rounding out your previous undergraduate education in the relevant subject areas.

The course is jointly taught by three Faculties - History, Faculty of Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies (PPSIS), and Classics - by lectures, seminars, classes, and by intensive individual research supervision. It covers the central themes of the history of political thought, political theory and their related fields in intellectual history, from classical antiquity to contemporary debates. You will be introduced to advanced research by being involved in an integrated study of these subjects through a combination of historical and theoretical perspectives.

You can move freely within the tri-partite subject structure (history of political thought, political theory, and intellectual history) of the MPhil and, in agreement with your supervisor, can explore a wide or narrow range of topics (but falling within at least two subject areas).
