Hugh Wood is a doctoral candidate in U.S. History. Prior to coming to Cambridge for the American History MPhil and PhD, he studied at the University of Nottingham. His work, supervised by Prof. Gary Gerstle, considers how different forms of private violence—conducted along the settler colonial frontier, at sites of industry, and during lynchings—related to the structure and development of U.S. government from 1860-1895. It aims to unite these disparate strands of American violence within a single framework drawn from theoretical literature dealing with the relationship between violence, government, and social order.
